It will also include renovating the amphitheatre, upgrading the parking areas, and enhancing the landscape to give the pavilion a refreshed and welcoming appearance.

'This project has had numerous milestones already. The public participation process happened a year ago, where community members could share their insights directly with the project team. Those insights are being incorporated into the ongoing design process, and we look forward to breaking ground in the first quarter of next year.

'What's equally exciting is the cultural mapping process linked to this project. It captured individual stories and memories of this coastal node, and the design team has drawn on these experiences to make sure that the redevelopment is inclusive and reflects the unique identity, heritage, and values of the Strandfontein community and surrounds,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.

The upgrades will align with recent developments at Fisherman's Lane and the 2022 Conceptual Development Framework for the Strandfontein Coastal Urban Node, while also incorporating themes that have emerged from the Cultural Mapping process. 

This multi-faceted upgrade aims to:

• Significantly refurbish the pavilion and its associated coastal amenities.
  
• Improve the quality and capacity of existing facilities.
• Promote facility clustering, multi-functionality and sharing to reduce operational costs.
• Enhance underutilised land for appropriate development.

The first phase of construction is expected to start in February 2026.
